Akiko Hirai
Ceramics

Akiko often carves her vessels and works quickly and rhythmically. There is an absence of mechanical regularity as she fears the rhythm becoming too static. The carved textures derive from Kamakura-bori, an old folk craft of wood carving based in Kamakura in Japan. This is called Kohiki.

In-Between

A solo show by Swedish Ceramic Artist Kina Björklund. Historical references abound in the work of Kina; decoration found in 18th-century ceramics, old lace, antique brooches and old ironmongery (her sister is an antique dealer). Kina uses these" tools" to stamp her plates and bowls. They provide intricate patterns. She uses terracotta clay and white transparent glazes, which look like icing on a cake.

Solitary Flowers, ‘Einsame Blumen’by Cécile Daladier

We will be showcasing a collection of Cecile’s ceramic Pique-Fleurs, that are inspired by Robert Schumann’s poetic ensemble ‘Einsame Blumen’. Schuman’s subtle and poetic music vocabulary resonates with Cecile’s relationship to flowers, clay and nature.

Solo Show by Akiko Hirai

"I have a small collection of old Japanese magazines called Bessatsu Taiyo (別冊太陽). Each issue features a creative field; theatre plays, photography, pottery, literature, architecture. Within the subject, there is always a specific focus on topics, objects or people. One of my favourite issues is called O-tsubo, Ko-tsubo. It translates big jars and small jars. I have had it more than a quarter of a century and have now read it so many times the pages are falling apart. Unfortunately, it is no longer published and you can only get second hand, back copies, which are very hard to come by. Most of the jars featured in these pages are antiques and wood-fired. Over the years I have studied the surfaces of these jars and spent time replicating the effects of their marks and textures using my gas kiln. Since my time as a student, these pages have offered me so much inspiration and insight into surface qualities, teaching me most about the chemistry of raw materials.

Constructed Texture

A collaborative exhibition between textile artist Catarina Riccabona and ceramicist Lisa Stockham. Each artist has created a body of work in response to the other’s practice. The makers share a love of texture. Referencing the history of an object or surface as a starting point. Signs of time passing, such as peeling paint, erosion and decay. Both look to the past for inspiration; traditional craft techniques, ancient artefacts and forms. Their process-led works have a similar sensibility, an organic and contemplative nature with the process of making as important as the outcome.
